Markus Vihottula has more than a decade of experience in board work, serving as an entrepreneur, CEO, board member, and Chair of the Board. Vihottula enrolled in the Certified Board Member Chair of Board Course not primarily to gain new knowledge, but above all to build new networks and to challenge and refresh his own thinking and routines.
In his day job, Markus Vihottula works at John Deere Forestry, where he is responsible for forestry attachments and equipment used in mechanized silviculture, as well as related software solutions. He already had extensive board experience from several companies, both as a board member and as a chair. Therefore, the role of the chair, along with its responsibilities and obligations, was familiar to him even before attending the course.
“I believe in lifelong learning. When you meet people from different industries and backgrounds, you gain new perspectives. The opportunity the course provides to challenge one’s own thinking and routines is always valuable,” Vihottula says.
Practical stories from experienced instructors made a lasting impression
For Vihottula, one of the most valuable aspects of the course was hearing practical examples and real-life experiences from seasoned board professionals.
“It was fascinating to listen to people who have accumulated extensive experience in board work. Their stories provide perspectives that you can compare with your own experiences and return to later when facing similar situations yourself,” he says.
Vihottula also appreciates the networking opportunities the course provides, both with the participants from different industries and backgrounds and with the instructors themselves.
“It is good to know that I can also reach out afterwards for further discussions if needed,” he adds.
There is always more to learn
Although Vihottula already has extensive experience in board work, including serving as a chair, he believes that continuous development remains important.
“There is always more to learn. If you think of your own experience and expertise as being, say, 80 percent, education and learning from the experiences of others can add another five percent. And that additional insight is valuable,” he says.
He also believes it is important to periodically evaluate one’s own routines and ways of working.
“In day-to-day work, routines naturally develop. From time to time, it is useful to take a step back and look at your own practices from a distance. The course serves as a useful reminder of good governance practices that can sometimes be overlooked in busy everyday life. I completed the course with practical checklists, tools, and ideas for organizing my work more effectively,” Vihottula explains.
An international perspective helps break out of the Finnish bubble
Before attending the Chair of Board course, Vihottula had also completed the Certified Board Member Course in English. He sees significant value in the international perspective that an English-language program brings.
“Boards benefit from people with different backgrounds and perspectives. An English-language course not only familiarizes participants with international terminology but also broadens the discussion beyond the Finnish context. Looking at issues from a wider perspective challenges conventional thinking,” Vihottula says.
Vihottula especially recommends the course to professionals who are preparing to take on their first chair role. At the same time, he believes the course offers value for more experienced board chairs as well.
“In my view, the Certified Board Member Chair of Board Course is particularly beneficial for those who are new to the role of Chair of the Board. However, I also believe that experienced chairs can use it to refresh and further develop their expertise,” Vihottula concludes.

Markus Vihottulalla on yli 10 vuoden kokemus hallitustyöskentelystä useissa eri rooleissa. Hallitustyö on tullut tutuksi niin yrittäjänä, toimitusjohtajana, hallituksen jäsenenä kuin hallituksen puheenjohtajanakin. Vihottula hakikin Certified Board Member Chair of Board -kurssista uuden tiedon sijaan ennen kaikkea uusia verkostoja sekä tilaisuutta oman ajattelun ja rutiinien ravisteluun.
Päivätyössään Markus Vihottula toimii koneellisen metsänhoidon laitteiden ja ohjelmistojen parissa John Deere Forestryllä vastaten metsänhoidon lisälaitteista. Kokemusta hallitustyöstä niin hallituksen jäsenenä kuin puheenjohtajanakin hänellä on kuitenkin jo useista yrityksistä. Puheenjohtajan työ vastuineen ja velvoitteineen oli tuttua jo ennen kurssia.
”Elinikäinen oppiminen on mielestäni tärkeää. Kun tapaa ihmisiä eri taustoista ja toimialoilta saa uusia näkökulmia. Koulutuksen tarjoama mahdollisuus oman ajattelun ja rutiinien haastamiseen on aina paikallaan”, Vihottula sanoo.
Kokeneiden kouluttajien käytännön tarinat tekivät vaikutuksen
Kokeneiden puhujien käytännön tarinat sekä eri näkökulmista ja eri yrityksistä tulevat esimerkit kuuluivat Vihottulan mielestä kurssin tärkeimpään antiin.
”Käytännön kokemuksia monissa liemissä keitetyiltä ammattilaisilta oli mielenkiintoista kuunnella. Niihin voi myös peilata omia kokemuksiaan ja palata myöhemminkin, jos vastaava tilanne tulee itselle eteen”, hän toteaa.
Vihottula arvostaa myös sitä, että koulutus laajentaa omia verkostoja paitsi muiden, eri taustoista ja toimialoilta tulevien osallistujien, myös kouluttajien kanssa.
”Voin ehkä myös jälkeenpäin olla yhteydessä ja käydä tarkempia keskusteluja”, hän lisää.
Aina voi oppia lisää
Vaikka Vihottulalla on jo pitkä kokemus hallitustyöskentelystä myös puheenjohtajan roolissa, hän kokee, että silloin tällöin on myös tärkeää pysähtyä pohtimaan omaa osaamistaan.
”Aina voi oppia lisää. Tavallaan jos oma kokemus ja osaaminen on vaikkapa 80 %, siihen voi tulla 5 % lisää muiden kokemuksiin vertailemalla ja kouluttautumalla. Ja se on arvokasta”, hän jatkaa.
Myös omia rutiineja ja toimintatapoja on Vihottulan mielestä hyvä aika ajoin arvioida.
”Arjen rutinoitumista vastaan omaa tekemistä on hyvä tarkastella myös vähän etäämpää. Koulutus toimii pienenä ’piiskanviuhautuksena’ ja muistutuksena hyvistä käytännöistä, jotka arjessa joskus voivat unohtua. Sain kurssilta hyviä tarkistuslistoja ja työkaluja sekä organisoitumista tähän”, hän sanoo.
Kansainvälinen näkökulma ravistelee pois suomikuplasta
Vihottula kävi myös puheenjohtajakurssia edeltävän Hyväksytty hallituksen jäsen -koulutuksen Keskuskauppakamarin englanninkielisenä kurssina. Englanninkielisen koulutuksen lisäarvo on hänestä merkittävä.
”Hallituksissa olisi hyvä olla eri taustaisia ihmisiä. Englanninkielinen kurssi ja kansainvälisempi näkökulma tuo, paitsi terminologian tutuksi, myös enemmän ravistelua normaalitoimintaan, kun asioita katsotaan suomikuplaa laajemmasta näkökulmasta”, Vihottula pohtii.
Hän suosittelee kurssia etenkin aloitteleville puheenjohtajille, mutta muistuttaa, että kaikkien on hyvä joskus pysähtyä päivittämään osaamistaan.
”Certified Board Member Chair of Board -kurssi on mielestäni erityisen kannattava aloittaville hallitusten puheenjohtajille, mutta uskon että kokeneempikin voi sen avulla päivittää ja kasvattaa osaamistaan”, Vihottula sanoo.
